Our MPA work is aligned with the United Nations Development Programme’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 1 (no poverty), SDG 5 (gender equality), SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth), SDG 13 (climate action), SDG 14 (life below water), and SDG 17 (partnerships for the goals).Â
There are five identified and agreed upon Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that are being monitored in each Marine Protected Area (MPA).
Regeneration of coral reef ecosystemsÂ
Mangroves restored
Increase in fish biomass
Improved catch by artisinal fishers
Jobs offered in the MPAs and reef-positive businesses

SDG14
Regeneration of coral reef ecosystems and endangered species – we focus on reducing harmful fishing practices through a combination of enhanced law enforcement, long-term community engagement programmes and developing alternative ways of earning a living.
SDG1
Reduction of poverty by helping coastal communities to sustainably increase fishery productivity and to develop alternative sources of protein.
SDG5
We work towards gender equality via female-focused job creation and training.
SDG13
Increasing climate change resilience and contributing to climate risk mitigation through improving the health of natural marine and coastal ecosystems, and protection for coastal communities from climate change-derived high-energy events.
SDG8
We are growing sustainable tourism and community-based aquaculture businesses to create jobs and increase economic growth.
SDG17
We strengthen the means of implementation and revitalise the global partnership for sustainable development.

Our MPAs apply a risk-based assessment process to prioritise protection and management. We take a zonal approach that covers both sea and coastline, and use scientific methods and engineering solutions based on data-driven insights.
If you would like to learn more about our risk management process, please refer to our Environmental and Social Safeguards Policy.
Through the support of our partners, we are implementing new impact measurement tools to improve impact metric methodology for the health of marine habitats around key areas such as sustainable fisheries, reef health, and tourism carrying capacity.

We produce monthly progress reports for our investors and donors, and share our annual impact reports with all stakeholders. This includes national and regional governments, community groups, and, of course, MPA employees. We are entirely transparent and accountable in all our processes.
