New funding from the GFCR: Scaling Impact in the Philippines and Zanzibar

Northeast Palawan, Philippines

We are excited to share a significant milestone achieved through our partnership with the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR). In the Philippines, home to the world’s third-largest coral reef area, a new influx of GFCR support will enable us will enable us to expand in Northeast Palawan to over 100 Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), safeguarding 800,000 hectares of vital coral refugia and supporting more than 20,000 fisher community members. This funding will also help us grow our pipeline of reef-positive business solutions, including community-based aquaculture, ecotourism, and sustainable fisheries, as part of our strategy to alleviate poverty around the MPAs and generate long-term incomes for conservation.

North Pemba, Zanzibar

New funding from the GFCR will also support our programme in the North Pemba Channel Conservation Area, home to some of East Africa’s most diverse coral reef ecosystems. This support will foster seven reef-positive businesses in the Blue Economy, improving the lives of 15,000 fishers around the conservation area and generating long-term incomes for the sustainable management of 27,000 hectares of marine protected area.

“Together, we are helping the planet. One Marine Protected Area at a time.”
